The rashes appears anywhere from 3-6 weeks after the chancre appears. These rashes may cover the whole body or appear only in certain areas such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
During this stage the bacteria are most active and any physical contact such as sexual or non-sexual with the broken skin of an infected person may spread the infection. The rashes usually heal within several weeks or months.
Other symptoms that may occur:
- Mild fever
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Patchy hair loss
- Swollen lymph glands throughout the body.
These symptoms may be very mild and will disappear without treatment like the chancre in the primary stages of syphilis. Many symptoms in secondary syphilis will come and go over the next 1-2 years.
