This stage is where first symptom of ulcer (chancre (‘shan-ker’) appears. The ulcer can take within 10 day to 3 months after exposure, but generally 2-6 weeks is where ulcer appears.
The chancre is generally painless, and often occurs inside the body. Therefore, it usually goes notice by an infected person. The common place where they are found: penis, vulva, or vagina. It can also develop on the cervix, tongue, lips, or other parts of the body.

The chancre usually disappears within few weeks without treatment, but if not treating during the primary stages, one-third of the infected people will go on to the chronic stages.
