Syphilis is a STD's caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. People infected by syphilis bacteria have been on the rise since year 2000. |
Recent clinical reports have shown increasing concern that syphilis increases by 3 to 5 fold the risk of transmitting and acquiring HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), the virus that causes AIDS (acquire immunodeficiency syndrome).
Syphilis is a very fragile bacterium, and the infection is almost always transmitted by sexual contact with an infected person. Syphilis spreads from the initial sore (ulcer) of an infected person to the skin or mucous membranes (linings) of the genital area, mouth, or anus of an uninfected sexual partner. It can also be passed through broken skin on other parts of the body.
The bacteria can cause more serious problem on a pregnant woman as it can be pass to her unborn child. The child can be born with serious mental and physical effects as the direct result of the infection.
