The usual symptoms are sore (commonly know a lesions). They can exist:

- In and around the vaginal area for women.
- On the penis for men.
- For both sexes around the anal opening and on the buttocks or thighs.

In some occasion, sores and also appear on other parts of the body where the virus has entered through broken skin.
Other symptoms can include:
- Itching or burning feeling in the genital or anal area.
- Pain in the legs, buttocks, or genital area.
- Discharge of fluid from the vagina.
- Feeling of pressure in the abdomen.
- Small red bumps appearing where the virus has entered the body, such as mouth, penis or vagina.
- Fever
- Headaches
- Muscle aches and pain.
- Painful or even difficulties in urination.
- Swollen glands in the groin area.
HSV can remain in certain nerve cells of the body for life, and can produce on and off symptoms in some infected people. Unfortunately, most people with the herpes virus are unaware of it because they have never shown any symptoms or they do not recognize the symptoms at all. Symptoms may vary in different individuals and when an individual becomes infected for the first time, symptoms will appear within 2-10 days and can last for up to 2-3 weeks.
