| Genital herpes is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are 2 types of HSV that can cause genital herpes: |

Type 1 – commonly known by the infections on the lips,

causing sores known as fever blisters or cold sores. Although, that is the case, it can still cause infection in the genital area and produce sores. |
Type 2 – this usually causes genital herpes, but can also infect the mouth.
Genital herpes is passed or transmit to another individual through sexual contact with someone who is having a herpes “outbreak”. This means that HSV is active. When it is active the virus usually causes visible sore in the genital area. Then sore shed or cast off the viruses that can infect another individual.
However, an individual can have an outbreak and not have any visible symptoms at all. This is how genital herpes can be passed on to another through sexual contact without knowing. Genital herpes can also be infected to a sexual partner during oral sex.
